How to avoid “storm chasers” when choosing a contractor

The last few weeks Ohio has experienced many days of severe weather. We have seen tornadoes in parts of the state as well as hail and high winds. These conditions more often than not cause storm damage to your house.

Some contracting companies will target areas that have just been hit with storms. These companies are not always from the area and may not always have your best interest as a priority.

The Better Business Bureau refers to them as “storm chasers”.

Here are some tips to avoid hiring a storm chaser:

Do some research

Check out sites like the Better Business Bureau or Angi’s. Read the reviews and keep an eye out for companies who are rated A+ and BBB accredited or have an Angi’s Super Service Award. Google reviews are also a great tool.

Call your insruance company

Find out information about what your policy covers. They may be able to recommend contractors.

Choose a local company

Be weary of out-of-state companies who are not local to the area. Doing research on the company can help you figure out if they normally do work in the area. With many contractors targeting areas who just were hit with bad storms, choosing local is a great way to avoid these storm chasers.
